Synonyms: often supplied as silica gel "sachets", "beads",
or "self-indicating gel".
Use: Silica gel is used to absorb water from a gaseous
environment; the water absorbing capacity is usually around 25%
by weight. When used to absorb water, an indicator may be added
which is blue in the dry state and pink when the gel is
saturated with water. Such a gel is usually described as "self-indicating".
The gel can be regenerated by heating in
an oven to a temperature of around 150 C.
Molecular formula: SiO2 xH2O
CAS No: 112926-00-8
EC No: 231-545-4
(May contain
cobalt chloride,
for which CAS no is 7646-79-9, EC No is 231-589-4
and Annex I Index No is 027-004-00-5)
